Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu popular known as Bobi Wine has been awarded the 2026 Leader of Courage and Innovation Award by the Renew Democracy Initiative (RDI).

Ssentamu, also known as musician Bobi Wine, was presented with the award at a ceremony in New York, USA.
In a statement after the ceremony, Kyagulanyi dedicated the award to Ugandans who have suffered in the struggle for political change.
He remembered those who were killed, arrested or forcibly disappeared, saying that their sacrifice would ultimately lead to a better future for the country. The award highlights his continued efforts to advocate for democratic reform and human rights in Uganda.
Kyagulanyi also congratulated his fellow winners, including John Bolton, Chrystia Freeland, and Mark Kelly, for their contributions to advancing democratic values around the world.
The diverse group of winners reflects the institution’s emphasis on international cooperation to protect democracy.
The recognition comes at a time of ongoing political turmoil in Uganda, where Kyagulanyi has remained a vocal critic of the government.
His message underscored the resilience of his supporters and reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful political change.
The Renew Democracy Initiative, RDI, said the award recognizes leaders who demonstrate courage and innovation in advancing democratic principles under difficult circumstances.
