Akothee Reveals Serious Lessons From Short Marriage to Omosh Family Tensions

Popular Kenyan female musician Esther Akoth, popularly known as Akothee, has opened up about her health problems due to the emotional burden she has carried for years, saying she tried to fix everyone in her family and those around her while forgetting herself.

In a post on her Instagram page on Sunday morning, Akothee explained how she tried to find love, acceptance, and respect from family and friends but found herself facing severe mental stress that led to frequent hospital stays.

“I realized what was taking me to the hospital so often. I tried to carry everyone on my back and completely forgot about myself. I thought I could fix my family and everyone around me,” she said.

The singer went on to explain that she desperately wanted to be loved and accepted as a normal human being but was hurt when she realized that for some people, she was just a source of money and a platform for them to achieve their goals.

She also touched on her past relationship with longtime partner Nelly Oaks, saying that whenever they argued, she felt like the relationship was the source of her pain—but later realized she had never taken the time to understand the true nature of her suffering.

In her search for peace, she said she found herself heartbroken several times, including after breaking up with longtime partner Nelly Oaks and then entering a short-lived marriage to Denis Schweizer, better known as Omosh—a man she described as a “narcissist.”

The couple married in April last year and separated by June of that year. She says the relationship taught her about emotional abuse such as deception and gaslighting.

“Breaking up with Nelly and falling into the hands of a narcissist was a painful but rewarding lesson. I learned about gaslighting, emotional manipulation, and mental torture. I am so grateful; it was a blessing in disguise,” she said.

She also touched on the major family conflict she faced between 2022 and 2023, which led her to set firm boundaries that helped her find stability in life.

“I found myself constantly going back to people who were putting me down. When we meet at events, we carry on as if nothing happened. It doesn’t even take a week before another fight. I knew, aaah, there’s something wrong here,” Akothee wrote.

Now, she says her life is filled with peace and a new light. She once asked Nelly Oaks why she no longer ends up in the hospital these days even when she’s tired from work, and she replied, “Because now you’re at peace and no one is bothering you.”
